What Epsom salts do for your health

Epsom salt, magnesium sulphate, English salt or bitter salt: it all comes down to the same thing. The healing effect of this special 'salt' has been known since the seventeenth century. It comes from the English town of Epsom in Surrey, where the water sources are rich in magnesium salt. A (foot) bath in Epsom salt is probably one of the best things you can do to take care of yourself. But did you know it can also benefit your plants and kitchen garden? We explain everything in detail.

Epsom salts (foot) bath

Epsom salts have various positive effects on the body (and mind!). For example, if you've had a weekend of heavy drinking and your body could use some detoxification, then a magnesium salt bath will do you good. No bath? Then a footbath will also suffice. The sulphates in the salt ensure that the toxins and heavy metals are pulled out of the body - a detoxifying and deacidifying effect.

Didn't you fly out at the weekend, but do you have an injury or just muscle pain? Even then you will benefit from a (foot) bath with this type of salt, which has to do with the deacidification effect. During (hard) exercise your muscles acidify because of the burning of carbohydrates. By taking an Epsom salt bath, the lactic acid in your body is reduced and you have less muscle pain - you can literally relax better this way. For this reason, Epsom salts also have a stress-relieving effect. When you are stressed, the magnesium level in your body is low. A bath with magnesium sulphate will replenish this supply, which you will notice immediately after bathing. Moreover, magnesium stimulates the production of serotonin - something we all want.

Bitter salt in your beauty routine

There are countless ways of using Epsom salts in the bathroom; the wonder drug is multifunctional. A bittersalt bath not only relaxes but also exfoliates the skin. You can easily make a scrub of it by partially dissolving the salt in lukewarm water and a drop of almond oil or a teaspoon of melted coconut oil. Epsom salt also works wonders for your hair. If you suffer from a lack of volume, for example, you might want to make a 50-50 mix of Epsom salt and conditioner. Mix it all together, massage it in thoroughly and leave it in for twenty minutes. Your hair will be less oily, feel super soft and have more volume.

Gardening with Epsom salts

Epsom salts are good for more than just relaxing your muscles, detoxifying your body and improving your hair. It also works really well in the vegetable garden. There are several ways to use magnesium sulphate. First of all, you can mix it into the cutting soil - one tablespoon per litre of potting soil is enough. It contributes to the creation of cell walls and the strength and growth of the plant's roots. But there is more: secondly, you can use it to make a plant spray. Epsom salt works perfectly as a natural leaf nutrient, and your plant will also absorb it more quickly if you spray it on the leaves. Five grams of Epsom salts are enough for one litre of water. Spray your plant or vegetables once a week until the leaves are wet. It stimulates photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. In the end, your plants will stay green longer and you will enjoy them all season. Finally, it prevents certain rotting of vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. In short: a smart remedy to keep yourself and your plants healthy.
